NaNoWriMo is an annual challenge to write a 175 page (50,000 word) novel in thirty days.  Sign up for NaNoWriMo begins on October first.  You have from November 1st to midnight on November 30th (the night of) - to reach the 50,000 word goal. 

The aim of NaNoWriMo is to challenge yourself and have fun doing it.  Naturally - you can't expect to produce a genius work of literature going at such an insane pace... which isn't to say it's impossible.  The main point is that you write write write write.

There is no great prize for winning the challenge - it's a personal satisfaction sort of thing.  The great thing about it is the feeling of being a part of this great community of writers from all over the world - all shooting for the same goal and encouraging each other along the way.  NaNoWriMo was first started nine years ago and has blossomed steadily since.
